Accessing Organizational Information – Data Warehouse

Company uses data warehouse information to perform the following:

• Base labour budgets on actual number of guest served per hour.
• Develop promotional sale item analysis to help avoid losses from overstocking or understocking inventory.
• Determine theoretical and actual cost of food and the use of ingredients.

History of Data Warehousing

Extend the information of data into information and provided ability to support decision making without disrupting the day-to-day operations.

Fundamentals of Data Warehouse

DATA WAREHOUSE is logical collection of information which gathered from many different operational databases that support business analysis activities and decision-making tasks.

Purpose: To aggregate information throughout an organization into a single repository for decision-making purposes.

EXTRACTION, TRANSFORMATION, AND LOADING (ETL), process that extracts information from internal and external databases, transforms the information using a common set of enterprise definitions, and loads the information into a data warehouse.

DATA MART contains a subset of data warehouse information.

Multidimensional Analysis and Data Mining

Databases contain information in a series of two-dimensional tables. Data information is multidimensional, which contains layers of column and rows in data warehouse and data mart. 

Dimension mean particular attribute of information.

Data mining is process of analysing data to extract information not offered by the raw data alone. By using data-mining tool, which is uses a variety of techniques to find patterns and relationship in large volumes information and infers rules that predict future behaviours and guide decision making.

Information cleansing or scrubbing is a process that weeds out and fixes or discards inconsistent, incorrect, or incomplete information.

Business Intelligence mean information that people use to support their decision-making efforts. Principle of Business Intelligence is:

Technology

For smallest company with BI software can do sophisticated analyses which is unavailable to the largest company a generation ago. For largest companies today can create enterprisewide BI systems that compute and monitor metrics on virtually every variable important for managing the company.

People

Allows organizations to systematically create insight and turn insight into action if their understand the role of people in BI. They can improve decision-making if they get the right person to do so. Usually, manager who in the field and close to the customer rather than an analyst rich in data but poor in experience.

Culture

Shape and manage corporate culture is the key responsibility of executives. The extent to which BI attitude flourishes in an organizational depends in large part on the organization’s culture.
